In Higher Ed

Here are a few of the additional roles I've held in higher education, primarily during my time as Dartmouth president.

External Leader, Harvard University Re-accreditation

Served as the external lead of Harvard University's last comprehensive evaluation that took place in the Fall of 2017 that led to its continued accreditation by the New England Commission of Higher Education in 2018.

July 1, 2017-June 30, 2019

Chair, Matariki Network

Chaired the Matariki Network of Universities, a seven-member consortium of leading international institutions of higher learning (named for the Maori word for the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters, constellation of stars). Co-founded by Dartmouth in 2010, its mission is "to build upon the collective strengths of its member institutions to develop international excellence in research and education and to promote social responsibility locally and globally."

Chair, National Academies' Committee on Confucius Institutes at U.S. Institutions of Higher Education

Chaired this ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine established to conduct a U.S. Department of Defense-sponsored study of Confucius Institutes in the U.S. and the potential risks they may pose to academic institutions, especially in openness, research integrity, and the free flow of talent and ideas. Under Hanlon's leadership, the committee identified best practices and principles regarding appropriate operations for U.S. academic institutions that the Department of Defense could use regarding waivers to the prohibition of research support at institutions that host Confucius Institutes. The committee also explored characteristics and features of these and similar foreign-funded programs that could serve as flags for academic partnerships. Read the committee's completed report.
